At Children’s Hospital Colorado, we aspire to create an inclusive workplace where every team member, patient and family member feels safe and valued, and where all patients benefit from the highest quality care, outcomes and experiences.

We know that we can better serve our community when our team reflects our patient population. But we also know it’s not enough to recruit and retain diverse talent — our commitment to diversity, health equity and inclusion must be ingrained in every aspect of our organization. From dedicated resources for supporting our team members’ continued learning to community programs created to address health inequities and improve patient outcomes, DHE&I is integral to our mission and culture.

Here, representation matters. Join us on our journey to create a more inclusive and equitable healthcare system.

What is health equity?

At Children's Colorado, our focus on health equity is a key part of our mission and culture. We believe that health equity is achieved when everyone has access to the resources and opportunities they need to attain their highest level of health. Fostering health equity requires intentionally engaging in the process of removing obstacles to health, such as poverty and discrimination. Achieving health equity is linked to a person's access to good jobs, quality education, essential healthcare and safe housing.

DHE&I programs for team members

We’re proud to have a dedicated Department of DHE&I to help guide our work in this area, including creating and advising on company-wide programs and training opportunities.

Captains of Inclusion

As one of our flagship learning programs, the Captains of Inclusion Development Program brings together cohorts of learners who consistently practice and model inclusive behaviors, promote the tenets of health equity and help create an organization that intentionally values difference. This extensive, in-person series encourages participants to challenge their mental models, inspires behavioral change and provides actionable steps toward building an inclusive culture.

Destination Equity

Destination Equity is a multi-part training and development series designed to advance our efforts to improve patient care and achieve health equity. The program is required for all Children's Colorado team members, including medical staff and faculty.

The series offers a robust curriculum combining online learning with live, instructor-led sessions focusing on everything from exploring identity and unconscious bias to recognizing and addressing microaggressions. Its goal is to provide team members with the knowledge and skills they need to address healthcare disparities and improve outcomes for the families in our care.

Experience Different: A Conversation

Experience Different is a regular discussion series that tackles topics that relate to all dimensions of difference and how they impact our identities, work and relationships. During these facilitated conversations, team members are encouraged to ask uncomfortable questions and connect with other members of our organization to discuss differences of mindset and opinion in a supportive and inclusive environment.

Team member resource groups

We know that person-to-person connections contribute to a deeper understanding of the differences that make all individuals unique, as well as offer an opportunity to discover the ways in which we are similar. Our chartered team member resource groups bring together those who share a common identity or interest and their allies to create space for discussion, education and celebration.

These groups are created and run by team members, and are guided by our Department of DHE&I. Most groups meet monthly to share ideas, plan for internal and external events and build support for their stated mission.
