About Clínica de Cirugía Pediátrica – our Spanish-Speaking Pediatric Surgery Clinic
Más información sobre la clínica de Cirugía Pediátrica (en Español)
Children’s Hospital Colorado’s Clínica de Cirugía Pediátrica is a Spanish-Speaking Pediatric Surgery Clinic created to answer questions from Spanish-speaking families and patients about pediatric surgical conditions and treatments. We’re here to help if your child has a medical condition that might need surgical treatment and you prefer a consultation in Spanish.
Led by native Spanish speaker José Díaz-Mirón, MD, the clinic helps Hispanic and Latinx families understand medical conditions and their treatment in a familiar language. Dr. Díaz-Mirón performs pediatric surgery for all types of conditions and is part of the Qualified Bilingual Staff at Children’s Colorado. He has years of experience in Colorado and surrounding states consulting patients and their families on general pediatric surgical conditions in Spanish.

Why visit the Clínica de Cirugía Pediátrica?
Our Clínica de Cirugía Pediátrica is the first of its kind in Colorado and the Rocky Mountain region.
Medical conditions can sometimes be complex and difficult to understand without a medical background. For people who aren’t native English speakers, it can be even more difficult to fully understand what a doctor is trying to tell you. Our Spanish-speaking medical experts explain conditions in a way that is easy to understand to help you make the best decision for your child.
This clinic ensures that you always have access to Children’s Colorado’s high level of care and multidisciplinary team of experts. We have doctors who specialize in every type of medical issue, from the most common illnesses to the most complex.
Who we treat at the Clínica de Cirugía Pediátrica
This clinic welcomes patients and their families who primarily speak Spanish and would like to have a surgical evaluation by a pediatric surgeon in Spanish. Our Department of Pediatric Surgery covers many different medical conditions that require surgery. If your child needs even more specialized care, we can refer you to the right doctor.
Our hospital also provides second opinions for pediatric surgery if your child has already been seen by a different hospital or provider and you would like a second opinion in Spanish.

Why a clinic serving the Hispanic and Latinx community is important
According to the 2020 population census, 21.8% of Colorado residents and 29.9% of Denver residents are Hispanic or Latinx.
In 2019, the Latino Leadership Institute at the University of Denver, in partnership with Latino Decisions and the Latino Data Project, reported some other important findings on the Hispanic and Latinx community of Colorado:
- 1 in 3 individuals in Colorado are projected to be Hispanic or Latinx by the year 2040
- 53% of Hispanic or Latinx in Colorado speak varying levels of Spanish at home
- 22.8% of Hispanic or Latinx individuals in Colorado rate their English proficiency as “not very good”
Medical literature documents the effects of language barriers faced by all ethnic minorities. Such barriers negatively impact both the quality of the medical care non-English speakers receive and their access to medical care.
At Children’s Colorado, the need for services to reduce these barriers is great. In 2020, Hispanic and Latinx patients accounted for 29% of the total visits to our Department of Pediatric Surgery. Of those families, 23% reported Spanish as their primary language and 9% required interpreter services in Spanish.
We have offered interpreter services for many years, but now the Clínica de Cirugía Pediátrica is helping us expand our commitment to providing quality medical care to all children.
