Referring to the Colorado Fetal Care Center
When you refer a patient to Children’s Hospital Colorado’s maternal fetal medicine specialists, you’re doing more than connecting them with one of the best fetal care teams in the country — you’re starting a partnership to get the best outcome for your patient and their family.
We’ll create an individualized care plan that meets your patients’ needs and makes their family and you feel confident in their care.
How to refer a patient to the Colorado Fetal Care Center
Our coordinators or the on-call physician are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for referrals, transfers or consultations. You can refer a patient to our fetal care experts by phone or fax:
What to expect when you refer a patient to the Colorado Fetal Care Center
We believe in collaborating with you to find the best care for your patient. Once you refer a patient to our fetal care team, we’ll start with an initial meeting with the family where we review:
- The patient's diagnosis
- Our recommended treatment approach
- Labor and delivery plans
- Directions for continuing care (usually provided by you)
We invite you to attend this meeting but if you are unable to attend in person, we can arrange a teleconference so you are involved in every step.
Following every consultation at the Colorado Fetal Care Center, we send a comprehensive summary of our findings. We also plan a follow-up phone call to answer any questions you may have and to ensure you have all the documents you need, including follow-up care notes.
Because we believe in collaboration and want to maintain continuity of care, we provide you with all the resources you need to provide care where you are. In most cases, you will continue to care for your patient during pregnancy in partnership with our fetal care specialists.
When fetal surgery is necessary, such as for twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome, we may temporarily assume care for the procedure and then refer the patient back to you for the rest of their care.
If your patient has a preexisting condition and other specialists are involved in their care, they are welcome to work with us during pregnancy. We encourage every patient to keep their current providers and welcome them to contact our coordinators anytime they have questions regarding their care. Our coordinators can be contacted at: 720-777-4463.
In cases that involve open fetal surgery, EXIT procedures or immediate pediatric subspecialty care upon delivery, we may recommend transferring your patient to the Colorado Fetal Care Center. Even if the patient and medical team plan to deliver at the Center, we invite the primary obstetrician or maternal fetal practitioner to perform cesarean section delivery with the assistance of our attending staff. This allows mothers to maintain their relationship with their primary obstetrician or maternal fetal medicine provider without being separated from their baby after delivery.
