What is liver cirrhosis?

Cirrhosis (also called liver cirrhosis or cirrhosis of the liver) is a stage of liver disease that occurs when cells in the liver are damaged and scar tissue forms. As scar tissue builds up, the liver becomes hard and blood has more difficulty circulating through the liver. Cirrhosis interferes with the liver’s many important functions including the ability to process nutrients, maintain blood sugars and filter toxins. Cirrhosis is the most severe stage of liver scarring and can mean that the liver is no longer fully functioning.

Who gets liver cirrhosis?

Cirrhosis may develop in children with any type of liver disease. Many people associate cirrhosis in adults with long-term alcohol abuse, but cirrhosis in children can occur with any chronic liver disease.
