What is spondylolisthesis?

Spondylolisthesis is a condition that happens when a bone in the spine (vertebra) slips out of its normal position. This usually happens due to a previous vertebrae fracture (spondylolysis) that occurred in the same area. The fracture may weaken to a point where the vertebra shifts, usually forward, from its normal position.

What causes spondylolisthesis?

A child who is active in sports such as diving, gymnastics, football or any sport that puts stress on the lower back may develop spondylolysis over time. Spondylosis may then lead to spondylolisthesis.
