What are symptoms of spondylolisthesis?

A child with spondylolisthesis may have pain and muscle spasms in their lower back and back of the leg. These spasms may cause changes in the way a child walks, such as limping or difficulty walking long distances. A significant slip can pinch the nerves of the spinal column, causing a burning pain or tingling in the thighs and buttocks.

How is spondylolisthesis diagnosed?

Spondylolisthesis is diagnosed by X-rays of the lumbar spine. The X-rays allow the orthopedic doctor to determine how far the vertebra has slipped and identify potential treatment options. In some cases, your doctor may also recommend obtaining a CT scan and/or MRI.

How is spondylolisthesis treated?

At the Spine Program at Children’s Hospital Colorado, we treat low-grade spondylolisthesis conservatively. Conservative treatment includes rest from activities and sports, anti-inflammatory medications and physical therapy. Your child’s doctor may also recommend a back brace.

If the slip gets worse, or your child has continued pain, we may recommend surgery.
