A diagnosis of eosinophilic esophagitis, or EoE, may feel overwhelming. Suddenly, your family must figure out how to avoid foods that trigger your child’s condition and cause symptoms. That often includes things like dairy, eggs, wheat and peanuts, which are commonly used when cooking meals.
But living with eosinophilic esophagitis can get easier over time. At Children’s Hospital Colorado’s Gastrointestinal Eosinophilic Diseases Program, our allergists help identify foods a child with EoE should avoid, and then our registered dietitians provide guidance on how to structure a balanced diet that excludes those foods.
Beyond recommending an EoE diet, our Program also offers education and support for your child and your entire family. From general tips to EoE awareness organizations, we’ve complied some additional information that may help.
Multidisciplinary care for EoE
Because EoE can affect many aspects of a child’s life, at Children's Colorado experts from multiple specialties work together to address your child’s specific health needs. Learn about the types of specialists you’ll meet and the resources they’ll provide to ensure the best care for your child and your whole family:
- Allergist: focuses on identifying foods that trigger symptoms and provides care for other allergic diseases
- Gastroenterologist: identifies and treats esophageal inflammation and complications including esophageal strictures
- Registered dietitian: evaluates a patient’s current dietary preferences and creates a therapeutic and feasible nutrition plan
- Feeding specialist: evaluates a patient’s current eating habits and family dynamics and works to create a treatment plan that is best for both short- and long-term healthy eating
- Psychologist: works with a patient and their family to learn healthy ways to cope with living with eosinophilic esophagitis
