Pediatric Respiratory Therapy Fellowship

Whether you’re a new graduate of a respiratory therapy program or an experienced RT working in adult healthcare settings, Children’s Hospital Colorado's Pediatric Respiratory Therapy Fellowship provides the training you need to kickstart your career as a pediatric respiratory therapist.

Our respiratory therapy experts created a one-of-a-kind transition to practice program to provide high-quality, specialized training for respiratory therapists who are passionate about working with kids. The Pediatric RT Fellowship’s robust curriculum provides you with the tools and clinical expertise you need to feel confident caring for this unique patient population. We created the Pediatric RT Fellowship Program to prepare team members to deliver exceptional and lifesaving care in a supportive and collaborative environment.

About our fellowship

The Pediatric Respiratory Therapy Fellowship is open to both new graduates and experienced respiratory therapists at our hospitals on the Anschutz Medical Campus and in Colorado Springs — no pediatric experience required.

The fellowship’s didactic work is completed at your home campus, and takes about six to eight weeks,  with a certificate of continuing education credits provided upon completion.

Eligibility requirements:

  • Experience: New graduates and experienced respiratory therapists are welcome to apply
  • Education: Associate degree in respiratory therapy or respiratory care is required at the time of hire; bachelor's degree in respiratory therapy or respiratory care is preferred.
  • Certifications and credentials:
    • Credentialed as a Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) by the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC)
    • Credentialed as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) by the NBRC within 12 weeks of hire
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers from the American Heart Association required at the time of hire
    • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification required within six months of hire
  • Licensure: State of Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA) Respiratory Therapist license is required

The program’s expert instructors will train you on everything from neonatal and pediatric assessments and conditions to distribution of medications, treatments and therapies for kids. Team members will also learn about quality and patient safety, emergency response, mechanical ventilation and more.

This program expands upon your current knowledge base and develops your skillset so you can help pediatric patients and their caregivers thrive.
